Web site design is a very personal and subjective experience. It can exhibit an entire company image or simply reflect the individual style of a single person. And since these things change on a regular basis, so will the need for your site design to change. The understanding that a web site is not static like an advertisement in a magazine, but rather is dynamic and always changeable, will help you to utilize your web site and its presence on the World Wide Web to the fullest.
I do not believe that sites should be designed and then simply handed over to the client. I believe that the client also needs to be given the skills to care for their site once the designer has provided them with the basic framework. I strive to create sites that are elegant and useful, sites that have simple code for quick browser loading and access, and sites that allow the client to look after their web pages when I am gone. I always include time to train the future maintainer of the site at the end of the design process.
I have two methods of approach for design work:
1. I create a proposal for you for the work that you would like to have done. A meeting is arranged so that we can discuss what you are looking for, and I can give you some suggestions of the arrangements you will need to achieve your goal. This can range from just a simple design of a few pages and a couple of graphics, to the full architecture of a large web site, including things such as obtaining web space, arranging for a URL, setting up a site search program, special coding (Forms, Javascript, Perl, etc.), and promotion of your site for the top search engines. If you agree to the proposal then I would begin work on the agreed upon start date. This is usually the best choice for people who have no presence on the web at all.
2. I work for you on an hourly basis. This can range from $40 to $60 CAD depending on the complexity of the work, the amount of work, and a number of other factors. This is usually the most suitable arrangement for those that have a web site that you are no longer happy with, or that you need some basic training to maintain your current web site.
The design is stored on a password-accessed site until it is ready to be launched, and the client has access to it at all times during the process so that they can monitor all updates and suggestions they have requested. I choose to work closely with my clients, either by email or in person, so that the right web site can be created to meet all their requirements.
